Get Cited by ChatGPT: 6-Step Process
ChatGPT cites sites it can read, understand and trust. A 6-step process to make your website citable — from robots.txt to llms.txt to structure.
To learn how to get cited by ChatGPT, you only need to understand three things: ChatGPT cites sites it can crawl, extract and quote. If an AI crawler can reach your pages, read your actual content without running JavaScript, and lift a clean two-sentence answer from under a clear heading, you are citable. Everything below is the practical work of making those three things true.
How ChatGPT decides what to cite
ChatGPT cites sources in two ways, and you should optimize for both. First, retrieval: when a user asks something time-sensitive or niche, ChatGPT can search the web (largely via the Bing index) in real time, fetch pages, and cite what it finds. Second, training data: the model has absorbed a snapshot of the public web, and it recommends brands it "remembers" — especially ones described consistently across many sites.
What that means in plain English:
| Mechanism | What it sees | What you control | | --- | --- | --- | | Live retrieval | Your current HTML, if crawlers can fetch it | robots.txt, server rendering, page structure | | Training data | Older snapshots of the web, plus third-party mentions | Consistent descriptions of your product across the internet |
A caveat worth stating honestly: OpenAI does not publish an exact citation algorithm. What follows is what is observable — which bots crawl, which pages get quoted, which brands get recommended — not inside knowledge.
Step 1: Unblock GPTBot
The most common reason a site never appears in ChatGPT answers is a robots.txt rule the owner forgot about. Many CDN and hosting defaults — and plenty of well-meaning "block AI" tutorials from 2023 — disallow GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot and friends.
Open your yourdomain.com/robots.txt right now and check for Disallow rules against OpenAI's bots. If you find them and you want citations, remove them. (If you want the full breakdown of which AI bots exist and what each one does, read our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt.)
Step 2: Make your content extractable
AI crawlers mostly read your raw HTML — they do not reliably execute JavaScript. If your product description, pricing or docs only render client-side, a crawler may see an empty shell and move on.
The fix depends on your stack, but the test is simple: run curl -s https://yoursite.com | grep "your key sentence". If the sentence isn't in the response, neither is your citation. Solutions:
- Server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation for any page you want cited.
- Avoid gating core content behind tabs, accordions or modals that need JS to open.
- Keep important text as real text in the HTML, not baked into images.
This is the single biggest technical lever, and it overlaps heavily with classic SEO — for the full picture of where the two disciplines diverge, see GEO vs SEO.
Step 3: Answer questions directly
ChatGPT quotes passages that already sound like answers. Look at how this very post is built: every section opens with one or two sentences that directly answer the section's implied question, in plain English, before any elaboration. That is deliberate — it's the format models lift.
Apply it to your own pages:
- Find the questions buyers actually ask about your category ("what is X", "X vs Y", "best tool for Z").
- Give each question its own heading — phrased close to how a person would ask it.
- Put a self-contained, 2–3 sentence answer immediately under the heading. No throat-clearing, no "in today's fast-paced world".
- Elaborate below the quotable chunk, not before it.
A page of marketing copy gives a model nothing to quote. A page of direct answers gives it twenty.
Step 4: Add structure
Structured data helps machines resolve who you are without guessing. Add JSON-LD to your pages — at minimum Organization (or SoftwareApplication for a product) with your name, URL, logo and a one-line description, plus FAQPage where you have genuine Q&A content.
Equally important and less technical: define your entity in consistent language everywhere. If your homepage says "SEO audit tool", your docs say "visibility checker" and your social bios say "marketing platform", models get a blurry picture. Pick one sentence that says what you are and who it's for, and reuse it verbatim across your site, directories and profiles. Consistency is what turns scattered mentions into a confident recommendation.
Step 5: Ship an llms.txt
llms.txt is a plain-text file at your domain root (/llms.txt) that tells AI systems, in Markdown, what your site is and which pages matter most. Think of it as a curated map: your product, your docs, your pricing, your best explainer content — each with a one-line description.
It takes an afternoon to write and costs nothing to host. Whether every model reads it today is an open question, but the direction of travel is clear, and the sites that adopt machine-readable summaries early are the ones machines understand first. Our guide walks you through writing an llms.txt from scratch.
Step 6: Get mentioned elsewhere
Citations follow consensus. When ChatGPT answers "what's the best tool for X", it leans on what the wider web says — comparison posts, forum threads, reviews, Reddit and Hacker News comments — not just what you say about yourself.
You can't fake this, but you can earn it:
- Be genuinely active where your buyers ask questions; answer helpfully, mention your product where it's actually relevant.
- Get into comparison content — reach out to people who write "best X tools" roundups in your niche.
- Ask happy users for reviews on the platforms your category uses (G2, Product Hunt, app stores).
- Keep the same one-sentence description everywhere, so third parties repeat it accurately.
One strong, accurate third-party mention often does more than ten pages on your own domain.
How to test whether it's working
You test citations the same way buyers find you: by asking. Once a month, run a small set of buyer-intent prompts through ChatGPT — "best tool for X", "X vs Y", "how do I do Z" — and record whether you're mentioned, cited with a link, or absent.
Keep it disciplined:
| What to track | How | | --- | --- | | Mentioned? (yes/no) | Fixed list of 5–10 prompts, same wording every time | | Cited with link? | Note which URL gets cited, if any | | Who got cited instead | Your real competitor set, per prompt | | Trend | Monthly snapshot in a spreadsheet |
Doing this by hand works but gets tedious fast, which is exactly why we built SuperSEO.sh. It runs this sampling for you as part of every audit, so you can track what ChatGPT says about you alongside your technical GEO checks.
FAQ
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Live retrieval can pick up fixed pages within days to weeks once crawlers can access them — there's no official timeline. Changes to what the model "remembers" from training data take much longer, since that only updates with new training runs. Focus on what you control: access, extractability and third-party mentions compound over months.
Can I pay for ChatGPT citations?
Not directly. OpenAI has introduced advertising formats, but ads don't buy organic citations in answers — the sources ChatGPT cites are chosen by the system, not sold. The only reliable path to organic citation is the crawlable, extractable, quotable work above.
Can a small site actually win citations?
Yes — niche is an advantage. For specific, low-volume queries there often aren't many good sources, and a single well-structured page with a direct answer can become the citation. You're not competing with Wikipedia on "what is marketing"; you're competing to be the best answer in your category.
Does domain authority matter for ChatGPT citations?
It matters less than in classic SEO, and nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact weighting. What is observable: clear structure, direct answers and third-party consensus let small sites get cited over bigger competitors. Authority helps, but citability is its own discipline.
How do I track my ChatGPT citations over time?
Keep a fixed list of buyer-intent prompts, run them monthly, and log mentions and cited URLs in a spreadsheet. Automate it if you can. SuperSEO.sh samples these prompts on every scan and tracks the trend for you.
Getting cited is not a trick — it's the sum of being readable, quotable and corroborated. Start with the free audit: scan your site free and see exactly where ChatGPT can and can't reach you today.
